Big reunion for youth club members from 1960s and 70s

1996.)
RAMBLING: An outing in about 1969-70 with Mike Christmas,
(third from left); Chris Hall (fifth from left); the late Fred Manning,
(fifth from right); Paul Brooks, (third from right); Jeff Bonner, (second
right) and Alan Propert, (far right).
The search is on for members of a north Bristol youth
club that boomed in the 1960s and 70s to take part in a reunion.
A big party is being planned
in the Spring for old friends from Argyle Youth Club. The club was based
at Argyle Congregational Church in Whitefield Road, Fishponds. In its heyday
from 1968 -1973, members went on sponsored walks and did 24 hour table tennis
marathons. There were club rambles to Cheddar Gorge and Chew Magna.
Innocence
And some
members became involved with the church and Sunday school, organising outings
for younger children and helping with old folks teas. The club was led by
the late Fred Manning, whose wife, Maisie, was a Sunday School teacher.
Former member, Paul Brooks said, " As the years passed I often wondered
how all those fresh faced teenagers had coped with the ups and downs that
life had surely thrown at them. How had we all changed since those days
of innocence?"
Mr. Brooks, who now lives
in Manchester, recently met up with another ex-member living in the area,
Mike Christmas, and the pair decided to organise the reunion. Philip Ashdown,
managing director of the Evening Post's sister transport company, EG Tucker,
was also a member and is helping to organise the event.. The venue and
exact date for the get-together have yet to be fixed.
Anyone interested in attending
the reunion should contact Mr. Ashdown, Mr. Brooks or Mr. Christmas.
